Lessons have been assigned to them based on their diagnostic test results both in Math and Reading. Within each lesson are brain break games. The district is pushing a goal of 45 minutes per week on Online Lessons in ELA and 45 minutes per week in Math to close the gaps found in the diagnostic. Math and ELA are providing some of that time during the week, but not all.

We have been teaching the Oranges lesson for a few years now and always thought the poem was just "made up" for this assignment!
Last year, Mr. Williams (our great CTE teacher and coach) was at his daughter's school when he noticed something on the wall in English class.
Yes Gary Soto is real! And so is ORANGES!
Soto is an American poet, novelist, and memoirist. "Oranges" was written in 1983!
WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: How to use MicroSoft Word (MSW) and the common keyboard shortcuts for most applications on the computer
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: Businesses thrive with the use of the tools like MicroSoft Word. Shortcuts make you look like a wizard as well as they help you do tasks more quickly on the computer
HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: You will work on a document in MSW through Teams and make corrections based on the image given!
Open Oranges Document in the Assignment "Oranges! (A shortcut assignment)" in MicroSoft Teams (it is a MicroSoft Word Document)
Following the image below, using the shortcuts you know now, correct the “Oranges” poem.
You will cut (Ctrl + X) and paste (Ctrl + V), highlight, center (Ctrl + E) and check spelling etc.
You may use your short cuts notes to help guide you.
Please raise your "hand" for questions or ask myself or your elbow partner.
Note: DO NOT RETYPE THE ENTIRE POEM! This assignment is for shortcut usage! Also...Pay attention to how many lines the correct poem has etc!
When you are done, close the document and click TURN in on the top right corner of this assignment. Take your time! Read it through!!!
Click for Office.com then click TEAMS!
ONE THING TO HELP!
This document is "AUTO NUMBERED"
*Gary Soto and Oranges are "Auto Numbered"!
To turn numbering OFF these 2 lines:
Select both words (Gary Soto AND ORANGES)
Click the gray box with the numbers and lines!
The numbers should disappear!
Each correction will be worth 2 points each! (30 points)
Students should have 55 lines (correctly...so don't randomly delete lines!)
Take your time! Don't lose points rushing!!!

For the Oranges assignment, we need to make the incorrect MicroSoft Word document match the image on the website.
To do this we will use what we have learned in MicroSoft Word and Shortcuts.
Let's start with the top of the page!
What do we see on the correct document? We see Oranges is the title and Gary Soto is underneath the title.
Let's remove the numbers by Gary Soto and Oranges...
MicroSoft Word has Auto Numbering
Select the words "Gary Soto" and "Oranges" (Click and pull from the left of the G in Gary to the right of the s in Oranges)
Click the gray box with the 1, 2, 3 to turn OFF numbering for the 2 lines!
The numbers should disappear and the 1. should now be on the line “The first time I walked.”
Numbers ON:
Numbers OFF:
Now we need to put Oranges above Gary Soto. We could type Oranges but that’s NOT how we are working today!
Select the word Oranges (click and pull to select the word or double click the word with your mouse)
CUT the word Oranges by using the shortcut CTRL + X (the word will disappear but it is actually copied to the clipboard)
Now, we need to put Oranges above Gary Soto. We could type Oranges but that’s NOT how we are working today!
Click to the left of G in the word Gary (the cursor should be blinking)
PASTE the word Oranges by using the shortcut CTRL + V (the word Oranges will appear above the words Gary Soto. Note: if Oranges appears on the left of Gary Soto simply click after the s in Oranges and click ENTER on the keyboard to return)
Let’s fix the Title Oranges!
Select the word "Oranges" (click and pull on the word or simply double click the word with your mouse to select it!)
Oranges in the correct document is
Bold (CTRL + B)
Underlined (CTRL + U)
Center Aligned (CTRL + E)
Orange (use Font color on the Home Ribbon to change the color to orange)
NOTE: for this assignment we are NOT worried about font size!
TRY TO USE THE SHORTCUTS TO CORRECT THE WORD!
BOLD:
UNDERLINED:
CENTER ALIGNED:
FONT COLOR:
Let’s fix the Subtitle Gary Soto!
Select the words "Gary Soto" (click and pull on the words or simply TRIPLE click the line with your mouse to select the entire line!)
Gary Soto in the correct document is
Bold (CTRL + B)
Italics (CTRL + I)
Center Aligned (CTRL + E)
TRY TO USE THE SHORTCUTS TO CORRECT THE WORD!
BOLD:
ITALICS:
CENTER ALIGNED:
Now go through the rest of the document and fix the errors to make the incorrect document (from the Teams Assignment) match the corrected document from the website.
You must go line by line to correct the file.
Look for red squiggly lines and blue straight lines and fix each one!
Notice that the correct document has 55 lines.
Some lines in the incorrect document were separated. Please fix those also!
TRY TO USE THE SHORTCUTS TO CORRECT THE DOCUMENT!
Double check your work! Make sure it matches all of the above corrections!
Close the document
